Clayton State University is a public university in Morrow, which is a city in Clayton County, in the US state of Georgia, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 5000 inhabitans, during the 2000 census.
Clayton State was founded in 1969, first starting as Clayton Junior College, which became a four year institution in 1986, being renamed Clayton State College. In 1996, Clayton State College became Clayton College & State University, being renamed by the Georgia Board of Regents, which, in 2004, approved the go ahead for developing a masters program, fact which, one year later, brought the institution's current name.
The university offers its students, who number approximately 6 600, educational programs, in various fields of study, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Most of the students at Clayton State live throughout Atlanta, and represent every region of the United States, including some 30 foreign countries. According to US News and World Report, Clayton had the most diverse student body population among comprehensive baccalaureate-level colleges and universities in the Southern United States, six times, in the past decade.
The athletic teams from Clayton State are known as the Lakers, who compete in all the traditional college sports for men and women, in NCAA Division II.
